New Tomb Raider installment will be released in mobile stores 2021

As one of the many pioneers of the action-adventure genre in games, the Tomb Raider franchise confirms that they will release their newest installment, Tomb Raider Reloaded, on mobile platforms in 2021.

History & General Gameplay of The Tomb Raider series

The Tomb Raider franchise, with its first game debuting in 1996 and receiving recognition for pioneering the action-adventure genre, has experienced ups and downs amidst their rapidly released titles. Having released 17 games in the main storyline and 7 spin-offs between 1996 and 2020, most releases consist of action-adventure based gameplay where players follow fictional character Lara Croft on her quests to explore perilous tombs and lost ruins.

Most of the installments are played from a third-person perspective, where puzzles, missions, and combat make up most of the gameplay. Compared to the main titles, some spin-offs present different forms of gameplay, such as the turn-based Lara Croft Go that has been released in both mobile and PC stores.

A glimpse of Tomb Raider Reloaded

The new installment of the Tomb Raider series, Tomb Raider Reloaded, is a joint effort of Emerald City Games, a Canadian game developer, and Square Enix London. On November 23rd, 2020, Square Enix released a 40-second teaser trailer of Tomb Raider Reloaded. In the trailer, Lara Croft, the protagonist of the Tomb Raider series, takes on a cartoonish figure and fights against enemies with her lethal dual-wield pistol. The trailer hints that there will be some puzzle-solving elements in the game. Other than that, the trailer revealed nothing further. However, ScreenRant, a news media that offers e-entertainment-related news, predicted that the narrative of Tomb Raider Reloaded might be more lighthearted and fantastical as compared to its previous titles because of its new art design.

Judging from the information released so far, Tomb Raider Reloaded will be a free-to-play, mobile action arcade game. The official announcement claims that Tomb Raider Reloaded will be released on both Android and iOS platforms. Tomb Raider Reloaded is expected to be available in 2021, but the pre-registration has not started on any digital distribution platform yet. Rumor has it that the pre-registration will start in January 2021.

Not a hype for Tomb Raider enthusiasts?

Despite the prospective outlook of the game, most Tomb Raider enthusiasts do not seem excited. Some of them dislike the fact that Tomb Raider Reloaded is a free mobile game and that the microtransaction/loot-box mechanism may ruin the game experience of this installment. Others complained that the artistic design of Tomb Raider Reloaded differs from the figure of Lara Croft in the previous installments, and downgrades her as a female heroine. Overall, players are not optimistic about the new title and are concerned that Reloaded may diminish the accomplishment of the entire franchise.

When all is said and done, Tomb Raider Reloaded seems to be an innovative adaptation of the previous installments, judging from the perspective of the art design and mechanism of the game. Players will have to wait until next year, when more information and the game itself are released, to make their final verdict for the game. (Ceria H. and Randy P./Ceria H.)
